Sitting US head of state Donald Trump still insists that the 2020 presidential election was “stolen” from him, his supposed defeat a con job by scheming Democrats.

His flagship chatbot, though, has other ideas.

This week, Trump launched America.gov, an AI-powered website designed to retrieve all the information you need from the federal government through a chatbot.

Though his administration has worked tirelessly to reshape the federal government to his views — such as by purging “woke” references from government websites, defunding climate research, and the like — the AI apparently did not receive adequate reeducation.

It did not equivocate, for example, when asked who won the 2020 election.

“Joseph R. Biden Jr. won the 2020 presidential election. Donald J. Trump lost,” the America.gov chatbot said in one viral screenshot, citing official results from the Federal Election Commission and other government documents.

Well, if a “super intelligence” says so — the term that Trump recently mandated that AI must be referred to by in all government documents and communications — then it must be true.

When The Hill reached out to the White House about this on Tuesday, an official said the service will be updated with more resources and the “most accurate information from the federal government.”

What the official meant by that is unclear. But the America.gov AI now refuses to answer questions about the 2020 election, giving a boilerplate statement: “I help with US government services and official program information. I do not discuss political questions or election outcomes,” it told us in our testing.

It’s not the only issue that the AI dissents from the Trump Consensus on. According to the New York Times‘ reporting, the America.gov bot also said that Trump’s claim that 25 million immigrants illegally crossed the border under Biden was false; that consumer prices are going up, not down, as Trump claims; and that it’s Americans, not foreign companies, who pay for Trump’s tariffs.

To the NYT, a White House official insisted the opposite of what the AI asserted.

“The president and administration have been clear about issues surrounding the 2020 election, the fact that foreigners will ultimately bear the cost of tariffs, and the economic benefits of the Working Families Tax Cuts,” they said.

Beyond the rich irony, it shows how disseminating information with AI models is a slippery slope because they can be manipulated to peddle certain views. On the other hand, it also shows that AIs still struggle to stick to the script. Even if the AI was deployed with a less flagrantly biased agenda in mind, it would probably ended up hallucinating at some point anyway.
